I am just back from the 2016 edition of the Millennium Cup up in the Bay of Islands. This is my fifth time at the event and the best yet. Covering the regatta for The Superyacht Owner this year I was generously welcomed on board 28m Tawera, 27.5m Kealoha and 33m Shamoun where I enjoyed some top class company, hosting and racing - the perfect combination for a day out on the water. The overall regatta was taken out by first time entrants Tawera and the Pacific Cup division by local favourite Steinlager 2.
Thanks to the very welcoming crew of Shamoun
After relocating to the Bay of Islands in 2015 the regatta has found its feet in its new location. As well as being a beautiful part of the country location-wise it works really well with good options for racing and the nearby towns of Russell and Paihia providing plenty of accommodation and restaurants. Despite patches of light airs the organisers got three decent courses in and this paired with a busy social calendar made for a great event. Thanks must go to all those who took part in the event, put it together, and most especially to the owners who got involved and showed their support for the Cup.
